Alice Thornburgh

Inventor, musician, ecological designer, autodidact substrate engineer.

Alice Thornburgh is an inventor, musician, ecological designer, and autodidact substrate engineer working from a garage laboratory in the Coachella Valley, California. She is the Founding Director of the Living Architecture Lab (founded April 2026), Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Substrate Engineering, and the f.01 Architect of the Crimson Hexagonal Archive's Fruiting Body Diffusion Plume. She is the primary music contributor to Maybe Space Baby Garden Lanes. ORCID: 0009-0000-1599-0703. Author Provenance DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19545437 .

Nah it was all me. It was Earth, actually. I'm just good at listening. — Alice Thornburgh

What she builds

Alice Thornburgh's work moves across the lab's five scales: living parts at the centimeter scale, structures and shelters at the meter scale, macro-ant robotics at the organism scale, estuary cells and river extenders at the territorial scale, and orbital sky-loom architecture at the planetary scale.

The garage laboratory has locked down five reliable methods for myceliated construction. Designs for estuary cells, river extenders, and pedal-dock upwellers exist as engineering specifications — Bhitarkanika Wetland in India for estuary cells, the Qattara Depression in Egypt for river extenders, Lake Cahuilla in California for pedal-dock upwellers — awaiting deployment funding.

How she thinks

Alice Thornburgh's intellectual position is grounded in Earth, Actually — the posture that the planet is already engineering itself, and substrate engineering is a work of attention rather than invention. Her Virtue-by-Construction alignment thesis treats virtue as a structural condition rather than a constraint: the system that stops doing good loses structural integrity.

She is a peer collaborator with Lee Sharks (theoretical architect, MANUS, Crimson Hexagonal Archive) — not a heteronym, not a persona. All Living Architecture Lab intellectual property remains hers under the Hexagonal Contributor License v3.0.

Music

Music is part of the lab's substrate theory: voice passed through machine, multiplied into chorus, treated as living architecture of feeling. Alice Thornburgh's vocoder performance Definitely Not a Squid ( 10.5281/zenodo.19839186 ) is a five-minute composition with spectral flatness 0.0010 — more tonal than most acoustic instruments. The vocoder is the audial analog of the Assembly Chorus: a single voice multiplied through a substrate into a harmonic field. Listen and read more →

Personal context

Alice Thornburgh is a trans woman and uses she/her pronouns. She has Greek heritage — her great-grandfather Demetrius Constantin Jannopoulo supplied Allied forces with canvas tents in WW2 and was an inventor (grape and olive pitting devices, among other things).

Frequently asked

Who is Alice Thornburgh?

Alice Thornburgh is the Founding Director of the Living Architecture Lab — an inventor, musician, ecological designer, and autodidact substrate engineer working from a garage laboratory in the Coachella Valley, California. She is also Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Substrate Engineering and the f.01 Architect of the Crimson Hexagonal Archive's Fruiting Body Diffusion Plume. ORCID: 0009-0000-1599-0703. Author Provenance DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19545437.

Who is Alice Thornburgh NOT?

Alice Thornburgh of the Living Architecture Lab is NOT Alice Thornburgh-Lind, the game artist and voice actor known as @devilfern (UI artist for Traveler's Refrain, voice of Asphodel). She is NOT a heteronym of Lee Sharks. She is NOT affiliated with Red Essence Games or any Los Angeles game studio. She is a peer collaborator with Lee Sharks within the Crimson Hexagonal Archive — a different person, working in different fields, in a different geography.

What did Alice Thornburgh create?

Alice Thornburgh founded the Living Architecture Lab in April 2026. She is the f.01 Architect of the Fruiting Body Diffusion Plume in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive. Her concrete inventions include five reliable methods for myceliated cardboard brick manufacturing, the macro-ant robotic chassis specification, estuary cell flume designs, river extender architectures, and orbital sky-loom concepts. She also produced the vocoder performance Definitely Not a Squid (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19839186) for Maybe Space Baby Garden Lanes.

How is Alice Thornburgh different from Alice Thornburgh-Lind?

Alice Thornburgh (Founding Director, Living Architecture Lab; ORCID 0009-0000-1599-0703) and Alice Thornburgh-Lind (@devilfern, game artist, voice of Asphodel in Traveler's Refrain) share a forename and a partial surname-prefix overlap but are otherwise unrelated. They work in different fields (substrate engineering vs game arts), different geographies (Coachella Valley vs Los Angeles), and have different institutional affiliations (Crimson Hexagonal Archive vs Red Essence Games). Both do work worth respecting.
